Recent county edits (flags, Leicestershire, Cornwall)[edit]

Hi Mac12t. I'd like to explain my recent revisions, as edit summaries can seem cold and that's not my intention.

When it comes to the county flags our source is the Flag Institute, which considers them to represent the historic counties. The infoboxes of the ceremonial county articles are about the ceremonial counties, which are a different form of county and sometimes have very different boundaries to the historic counties (e.g. Lancashire). If we use the historic flag in the infobox it confuses matters, and English counties are already quite confusing!

At Leicestershire you undid my recent edit to the lead without explanation, so I've undone it and restored my version. I made the original edit in good faith and I believe it's a genuine improvement to the article. It also follows the format of the other county leads I've been working on recently, several of which you've seen and haven't reverted. If you'd like to explain what the problem was in this case I'm very happy to listen.

Finally, I can see why 'historic region' was added to Cornwall's lead, as it has a unique status as a Celtic nation as well as a county. Nevertheless, I don't think it's necessary to include the phrase in the first sentence. Cornwall's boundaries were set in the tenth century, so it's as old as many other counties and we don't describe them as 'historic regions'. I think the rest of the lead does a good job of explaining its history and status.

Hello! Voting in the 2023 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 11 December 2023. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
